Eve Fletcher on Finding Makaha

We were on our way to find Makaha. The trees were hanging over the road, they’re gone now, and there was a bunch of Marines up ahead. Marge pulled up alongside the marines and they said we could pass. All of a sudden there was an explosion. Marge was driving and I yelled, “We’ve been hit”! I went down underneath the dash board to hide. . When I got back up on the seat I saw marines hanging from the trees and the explosion was from testing. No, we weren’t hit but I sure thought we were!
We wound up at Kaena Point looking for Makaha. We didn’t know where it was so on we went down this bumpy dirt road still looking. We came upon a surf break that looked good, I don’t know what the name of it is. We paddled out and there was a Hawaiian man bodysurfing. I accidentally ran him over. I apologized and he was real nice. He invited us to his home for dinner but we couldn’t go as we already had to meet up with the guys. I sure would have liked to have had dinner with his family.
